We took a taxi up to vattakanal and pootled down the 3km dirt road to the village. Winding past waterfalls and jaw dropping cliffs we found the end of the road at what could be best and concisely described as god's balcony. A clutch of houses and shops perched on top of a cliff looking out onto the plains of tamil nadu below.
The home stays here are self catering, random folks, mainly israeli coming together, relaxing and cooking together commune style. We quickly found a spot owned by a very sweet lady who had recently been a victim of some obviously twattish people who buggered off without paying their 200 rupee rent and nicking the keys in process. What a bunch of c**ts. Pardon my french but seriously, what sort of person would do that? We stayed just the one night as the place was taken over by just one israeli couple who were baked from dawn till dusk playing god awful music as loud as possible. We got up early to catch the legendary sunrise which was undescribably beautiful.
Having the canadian girls in tow was great as they were very sweet and just wanted to relax after visiting the hectic cities down below. We searched for a spot that morning and came up trumps with a 4 person villa right out of the way of the people getting zonked out of their gourds on the other hillside. We loved the place that much we decided to stay 4 days. We took in a couple of nice walks to the falls, witnessing even more stunning views and gaining a new best mate called joshi, the local puppy who followed us everywhere. We also met another lovely canadian couple and enjoyed cooking for ourselves and other people which made a pleasant change. During our time i managed to get part of (as one if my recent project managers frankly and amusingly described) "that hippy shit out of my system".
The local wildlife was fun including a couple of interesting / scary encounters poor niki was subject to which will be supplied in a later post. The monkeys below certainly had a penchant for aubergine curry and other things that weren't exactly put on a plate for them!
