We left madurai with high hopes of soothing cool air and astonishing views at our destination of kodaikanal in the western ghats, a mountain range slicing through the states of kerala, tamil nadu and karnataka. The bus drive up there was long and arduous but equally rewarding for the beautiful views. We arrived late and made the bad decision of entrusting a local tout to find us a place for the evening. A very nice chap but we were landed with a room that was a bit heather mills. No, it didnt have one leg, it was pretty on the outside, rotten on the inside. We stayed one night in the creepy hanzel and gretel abode with local dog howling all night and got up early to walk round the stunning lake in town. We bumped into a couple who spoke of a little local village vattakanal 6kms away with stunning vistas and a hippy atmos. To confirm the existence of this mythical mountain paradise we spoke to the local tourist office bloke and he said that vattakanal would suit 'you people'. Hurrah. We had some breakfast and chatted to two young french canadian girls who were looking for a place better than the local town which was becoming busy and dusty. So we said goodbye to kodaikanal and headed into the unknown of vattakanal.
